Who has to go early, and who gets to wait?

In harness racing the first quarter decides most of the race. Some drivers have a choice about it. Most don't. This tells you which is which, and what that means for who wins.

You need two things off the program for each horse: what post it drew, and how it opened in its recent starts.

Leave is your own call on where a horse gets away — type 1 for the horse you know is being sent, 2 for second away. It overrides the figures at the quarter and fades through the race, because on 629 lines the first call explains 82% of the half but only 21% of the wire. Odds takes 6-1, 7-2 or a decimal.

Waples. Of 113 winners in 513 clean lines, 93% were inside four lengths at the three-quarters and 90% inside three. Inside the gate horses won 29.4%, outside it 5.1%.

Position at the three-quarters. 1st wins 57%, 2nd 25%, 3rd or 4th 16%, 5th or worse 4%.

Gate ceiling. A horse's best time to the three-quarters correlates 0.82 with the fastest quarter it has ever shown, and the fitted line lands on that quarter with no bias and 2.1 lengths of average error. Dividing the best three-quarters by three gives an estimate 2.9 lengths too slow — horses do not split evenly, the opening quarter is quicker than a flat third of the trip. As a ranker of quarter position that figure scores 1.79 against 1.59 for the leaving record and post, and adds +0.025 places on top of them, so it stays a ceiling and not a projection. The older version of this note used a within-race fit that ran 1.6 lengths slow on every horse.

Superseded: a horse's own cumulative time to the three-quarters correlates 0.78 with its own opening quarter that day — 62% explained. Of 48 horses who have shown a 1:23.1 or better three-quarters, 36 have opened in 27.0 or faster at some point (75%); of 54 who have never bettered 1:24.2, two have (4%). So the ability transfers. It is not a lock — a quarter of them never show it, and the slowest is 28.1 — so the figure is reported as a ceiling and never used to project where a horse will actually be. An earlier version of this test used the third-quarter SPLIT rather than the cumulative time and found nothing; that was the wrong variable.

Past prices are real but redundant. Last race's price alone ranks the finish at 1.73 against about 2.0 for guessing, so the crowd's old opinion does carry signal. But it is already inside three-quarters position and tonight's board: adding it there costs +0.022 places, and even with no live board at all it costs +0.031 on top of position. It is not ignored — it is accounted for twice over.

Odds. Odds-on 49%, 2/5–5/2 42%, 5/2–5/1 18%, 10/1–25/1 5%. The bet-down angle dies once price is held fixed: halved-or-better won 11% against 13% in the 5/2–10/1 band.

Constants. A beaten length is 0.197 seconds, fitted on 329 finish times. A ten-point class rise is worth 1.38 seconds to the three-quarters. Track spread after class adjustment is 0.97 seconds.

The 3/4 figure has three bases — all starts, worst dropped, best of three — scoring 1.82, 1.84 and 1.84. Indistinguishable, so it is a control, not a decision. A red ± means that horse moves two lengths or more across the three; treat him as unranked.

Drawn too far outside to sit back. They'll race for position whether the driver likes it or not, and they'll spend energy doing it.

Can sit and pick their spot

Enough speed to go if they want, drawn well enough that they don't have to. The driver watches what happens outside and then decides.

No early speed either way

These will be at the back regardless of the draw. They need the horses in front of them to tire out.

1Q place is where the horse figures to be leaving, with the measured error beside it in Range. Back at 3/4 is class- and track-adjusted lengths off the projected leader; Waples marks whether that is inside four. Best own 3rd Q is the horse's own fastest third quarter, a degree mark meaning those moves came first over. Overlay is how many places better the figures rank him than the board does — green is where the disagreement is worth money.

Why the draw decides who goes

Two horses can have exactly the same gate speed and race completely differently, and the reason is where they drew.

Put a horse on the outside and the driver's options disappear. Take back from post nine and you're stuck behind a wall of horses with three quarters of a mile left and nowhere to go. So the speed gets used, not because it's the best plan, but because the alternative is worse. Put that same horse on the rail and it can tuck in, save ground, and move whenever the race breaks open.

That's the whole idea. Speed you're forced to use isn't the same as speed you get to choose when to use. The first kind burns off in the opening quarter. The second kind is still there in the stretch.

What a hot pace actually does

When three or four horses all have to go early, they take each other on. Nobody gets an easy lead, everyone up front pays for it, and the middle of the race slows down. That's when a horse from behind runs them all down. When only one horse has early speed, the opposite happens. That horse strolls to the front, sets whatever fractions it likes, and the closers never get near it.

So the question isn't how many horses in here have speed. It's how many of them are drawn where they have to use it. Three quick horses on the inside make for a slow race. The same three on the outside make for a fast one.

One thing to watch at Mohawk

Woodbine Mohawk is a seven-eighths mile track, so the field hits the first turn quickly and positions lock in early. A horse that drops to last is already eleven or twelve lengths adrift with three quarters left, which is more than two seconds to find. Taking back there is expensive in a way it isn't everywhere.

Common questions

How do I know which horse will lead?
Look at how fast each horse opened in past starts, then look at where it drew. A quick horse on the outside will almost always be involved early, because sitting back would bury it. A quick horse on the inside might go, might not.
What counts as a hot pace?
Several horses forced to race for the lead at the same time. They wear each other down, which helps whoever is sitting behind them.
Does post position really matter that much?
Yes. Inside saves ground and preserves choices. Outside costs ground and removes them. It's often a bigger factor than the difference in ability between two horses.
Is this the same thing as a speed figure?
No, and they work well together. A speed figure says how good a horse is. This says how the race will be run and who that shape helps.
Can I use it at a half-mile track?
Yes, but rebuild your numbers for that track. A mile at a half-mile track has four turns instead of two, so racing wide costs much more and sitting inside is worth more.
